Veteran’s Section

The veteran’s Thursday competition was the 4th. and last round of the Winter Shield - a Stableford off the yellow tees.  A much milder morning of late with glimpses of spring-like sunshine surprisingly attracted a fairly small field of 48 players. The winner of this last round and the only man to break the forty barrier was Allan Harvey in Division 1 with 40 points, 2 ahead of vet’s vice-captain Roger Pollock with 38 points.  Dave Cole was the leader of Division 2 with 37 points.

The winner of the shield is the man with the highest total of points from the best 3 of the 4 rounds and going into the last round the leader with 116 points was Brian Osborne.  His last round of 34 was not enough to improve his total but his first 3-round scores gave him a substantial lead over the rest of the field.  Harvey’s score of 40 earned him the runner-up position but Osborne still won the Winter Shield by a clear 4 points.

Men’s Section

The men’s Sunday competition was a Three-Man Team Bowmaker off ¾ handicap and 36 teams took part.  There was little to choose between the top 2 teams and just 1 point separated the winning team of Graham Hunt(6), Phil Dowell(10) & Mike Franklin(11) with 76 points and runners-up George Brown(14), Richard Balson(18) & Paddy McMaster(19) with 75 points.  Then followed a 4 point gap between the team of Pat Woolmington(2), Ed Cary(5) & Ben Ashton(12) who came third with 71 points.  Eight players carded twos.

Ladies Section

.The challenge of the 3 clubs and a putter competition is what clubs to choose, and probably knowing that apart from the putter, you can so easily make the wrong decision. Fortunately the weather was kind to the ladies on Tuesday and despite not having a full set of clubs some good scores were achieved over 11 holes. However the overall winner for this competition, Saturday and Tuesday combined, was Liz Walker a Saturday with 20 points, followed by Jane Dowling with 17 pts on a c/b from Val Cameron, both Tuesday ladies. The prizes of wine and chocolates reflected the fact that it was Valentines Day.
