DORSET LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP

Meanwhile over at Came Down in the Silver Spring Challenge Bridport's vice-captain, Di Loving came 2nd in the Gross scores with 85.  Others in the Bridport contingent played the qualifier for the Johnstone Cup, unfortunately only Toshiko Ricketts managed to qualify. The County Championship should also have taken place on Wednesday & Thursday but unhappily play was abandoned on Wednesday and the course was closed on Thursday due to, this years curse of, rain and fog. What a miserable ending to what should have been a very stimulating 3 days. Now the semi-final is due to be played on Saturday am followed by the final in the afternoon. Bridport's Nicky Stone reached the semi- finals losing in a hard fought match to Sophie Keech 2-1 from Lyme Regis, who went on to win the Championship. Nicky Stone didn't come away empty handed though, she won the trophy for the Best Nett score.

The Vets meeting on Thursday was abandoned because of rain.

SENIORS MIXED OPEN

Howard & Rosanne Bonfield with Lady Captain Sue Pollock On Friday 11th May there was a Seniors Mixed Open which took place in a mixed bag of weather; starting with grey skies and very cold wind moving to sunshine and persistent westerly wind. The format off 6 holes 4BBB, followed by 6 Greensomes ending with 6 Foursomes makes for complications in marking the card. None of that stopped the winners from scoring 38 pts which was very well done given the conditions. 34 pairs took part.
This years Lady Captain Sue Pollock presented the prizes.

SUMMER PARTY
May 3, 2012, 10:51 am

Due to disappointing ticket sales the Summer Ball on Saturday 9th June cannot go ahead as planned ... Instead a Summer Party is taking its place at just £25 a ticket!

We will still be using the marquee that will be in place for a wedding breakfast on the day, but have cut our costs considerably by not adding a planned extension.

The Summer Party will still have a great marquee, complete with live band, Wessex FM disco and gourmet buffet – fantastic value for £25.  However, to ensure everyone has space to enjoy their evening, ticket numbers will be limited to just over 100.  Dress will be smart casual.

Those who have already booked for the Summer Ball will be given priority in booking for the Summer Party – just confirm you wish to attend at the office.  We expect the remaining tickets to be snapped up quickly, so to avoid disappointment contact the office as soon as possible to reserve your place.  Groups of friends can book  their own table.

Veterans’ Section

The weather for the veterans’ Thursdays competition was horrendous, very heavy showers, some prolonged and accompanied by strong winds for good measure.  It was the 3rd round of the Holmes Cup otherwise I suspect the turnout would have been much lower than the 55 brave souls who donned their waterproofs and battled their way to their first tees.  I have first hand knowledge that one competitor didn’t even complete his first hole before beating a hasty retreat and in all 20 entrants did not complete their rounds.  Of the 35 stalwarts who handed in a valid card Roy Gill’s gross 87 was the round of the day and his net 75 pipped Alan Harvey by 1 shot in Division one and made him the overall winner.  Dave Cole was the leader of Division two with a net 77.

RESULTS:-

Division One 1st. Roy Gill 87-12-75.  2nd. Alan Harvey 92-16-76.

3rd. (acb) Derek Griggs 97-20-77.  4th. Brian Walsh 94-17-77.

Division Two  1st. Dave Cole 101-24-77.  2nd. John Harper 101-23-78.

3rd. Tony Williams 106-27-79.  4th. Alexander Millar 108-28-80

APRIL MEDAL 14th/17th.
There seems to be a pattern developing vis a vis the weather on Tuesdays. Monday the 16th of April the rain tanked down as it had the previous week, Tuesday 17th started fine and then, guess what, it tanked down just as it had done the week before. The Ladies with a late tee time for the April Medal had to come in to get away from the very heavy rain and hail, resulting in 6 Ladies carding a 'no return'. 26 completed the Medal Competition & 6 the Stableford Competition. For the Medal the CSS was 75 and reduction only was the order of the day. The winner of Division C Pat Baldwin had her handicap cut 1 shot to 32. The EWGA Medal winner was Ruth Donovan with net 73.
RESULTS
Division A:
Winner...Liz Thompson net 75
Division B:
Winner...Ruth Donovan net 73
Division C:
Winner...Pat Baldwin net 74.
STABLEFORD
Winner.....Linda Knapp 17pts
21st & 24th April the Foursomes Stableford competition for the Silver players and the start of the Australian Spoons for the Bronze took place in much the same conditions as the previous week; Monday heavy rain most of the day, Tuesday fine to start with finishing with more rain. Very good for the course but not so good to play in. The Australian Spoons can be replayed at any time until the closing date of 15th June, the highest scoring pair will then have a chance of going through to the area final at Chippenham Golf club on the 25th July.

RESULTS

Silver Winners......Marion Hurley& Julie Oliver......36pts
Leading Australian Spoons Pair..... Ruth Donovan & Liz Walker 35pts

Ladies Matches - April
April 23, 2012, 7:32 pm

Delighted to say that in the 2nd round of the Daily Mail Foursomes, Nicky Stone and Lynne Jessop beat Rosemary Bickhamand Lorraine Pike from Yeovil 1 up in a closely fought battle.

We won our first Friendly match of the season against Lyme Regis 4-1 playing at home but unfortunately lost 7-0 to Dorset Golf and Country Club away.  Well done though to all the players.

What happened to the masters "Albatross" Ball

Masters 2012

MASTERS NOTEBOOK: By Terry Moore
=================================
OK, what happened to the famed “albatross” ball of Louis Oosthuizen that he tossed into the gallery surrounding the second hole at the Masters on Sunday? Well, as you have probably seen or read, it was caught by Wayne Mitchell, 59, of New Tripoli, PA which is outside Allentown. Vice-President of Air Products, Mitchell and his wife were tournament guests of an executive of Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan. Along the rope line, they had been seated at the par-five second hole since 10:00 a.m., patiently waiting over four hours for the leaders to come through.

After he caught the ball and placed it into his pocket, Mitchell was later escorted by security and Augusta National members to Butler Cabin where he met Billy Payne, Augusta National’s Chairman. As reported by several news outlets, including the Augusta Chronicle and The Morning Call, Mitchell’s local newspaper in Bethlehem, PA, Mitchell gave the ball to the club for its archives located in the Trophy Room which includes the ball Gene Sarazen holed out with for his iconic double eagle in 1935.

As quoted in The Morning Call earlier this week, Mitchell said: “I'm not a souvenir-grabber. For me, the ball clearly represented a special moment in history. Now, it's in the hands of the club, where it belongs." Mitchell and the club declined to discuss details on the actual transaction.

However, I’ve learned from a reliable source that in exchange for the ball Mitchell was offered two Lifetime Passes to the Masters. Before happily accepting, Mitchell also asked Payne for one other request: the opportunity to play Augusta National. Payne said that could be arranged.

That’s what I call a great catch: Lifetime passes to the Masters topped off by a memorable round at Augusta National. So next year don’t be surprised to see patrons with catcher’s mitts.
